Differentiating Instruction and RtI:
A Natural Fit for Supporting Student Success
March 6, March 20, and April 9, 2012 (Registration Deadline: February 27, 2012)
4:00 – 7:00 p.m. (Registration time: 3:30 p.m.)
Bangor Motor Inn, Bangor, ME
While DI (Differentiated Instruction) has been around for 20 years, RtI (Response to Intervention) is currently one of the most talked about initiatives in education. DI and RtI have some similarities. Both focus on curriculum, instruction, and assessment, although sometimes in different ways. Flexible timing and grouping are hallmarks and experiences are planned for in a systematic and intentional way. Both put students at the center of teaching. These similarities make sense, yet the practical side of our brains asks: How do I implement these practices? What does it really look like in the classroom? How do I manage everything? We invite you to join us in a 3-part series as we weave together and merge these two initiatives into an effective learning environment for all students.
Session 1 – Connecting DI and RtI, Session 2 – Collecting Instructional and Management Strategies, Session 3 - Advancing DI into the 21st Century
Outcomes:
- Build an understanding of how DI and RtI support student success
- Increase knowledge of how to differentiate learning opportunities that support student needs;
- Expand repertoire of instructional strategies to meet different learning goals and student needs;
- Gain confidence to apply specific instructional strategies to their own classroom/teaching context;
- Have opportunities to collaborate, self-assess, reflect, and generate goals and plans; and,
- Translate into classrooms one or more key principles of differentiation based on the Common Core State Standards
