Introduction to the Restorative Approach and Community Circles

This workshop will introduce attendees to the Restorative Approach, both the philosophical principles and specific, hands-on practices.  Participants will learn about, and practice, the Community Circles process and watch a video to get a sense of what the Restorative Approach looks like in a school.

Outcomes:

  • Participants will understand the philosophical foundation of the Restorative Approach.
  • Participants will understand the purpose and process of Community Circles.
  • Participants will begin to identify ways to implement the Restorative Approach in their schools and classrooms.
  • Participants will begin to gain a comfort level with the language, principles and practices of the Restorative Approach.

Presenters:

Barb Blazej, M. Ed., is the coordinator of the Restorative Practices Collaborative of Maine, and instructor in the Peace & Reconciliation Studies Program at the University of Maine, Orono.  She has been working in the field of conflict resolution education, youth violence prevention, and restorative practices in Maine's K-12 schools for the past 14 years.

Kathleen Oliver, retired school library media specialist, began working with The Restorative Justice Project of the Midcoast at Troy Howard Middle School 6 years ago. As a member of the Restorative Practices Collaborative, she travels around Maine to present at institutes and workshops, training educators in restorative practices based on her experience in working with students. 

Workshop fee:  $65.00 registration fee for non-ME POP PBIS schools. Registration for ME POP PBIS schools will be paid through grant funds. Our cancellation policy is 72 hours prior to the event. You will be expected to pay if you do not attend and cannot provide printed confirmation of your cancellation. If you are a full-time student enrolled in an education degree program, contact us about a discount.

Three Clock Hours will be awarded.

This workshop is designed for special and general education educators interested in school wide positive behavioral supports.
