The MLTI staff provide specific and timely learning opportunities "using web-based technologies to communicate and collaborate with educators interested in engaging in conversation around teaching and learning with technology. These WebCast events will provide an opportunity to participate interactively in a live virtual environment, all right from the comfort of your own computer desktop. These timely and important topic schedules and archives are housed on the MLTI site. The most recent topic was Fair Use and Media: From Copyright to Creative Commons (Digital Citizenship) was presented on February 3rd.

As citizens of the 21-st century, we have reached a point in human history where content creation and consumption is at an all time high. With this increase the notion of copyright has become prominent among all who traffic information. This webinar will provide the participant with an introduction to the concepts of copyright.

During the 3:15 pm webinar we have the honor of talking with Creative Commons Policy Coordinator, Tim Vollmer. He will be discussing Creative Commons from an educators point of view. There will be time for Q&A so make sure to bring your questions. During the 7:15 pm webinar we will be discussing Copyright and Creative Commons with as many layman’s terms as possible. Very often it is easy to get caught up in the jargon around copyright. This session aims to introduce participants to copyright, the public domain, fair use, and Creative Commons.

Report: Promote Internet safety, but don't scare students
http://www.eschoolnews.com/2010/06/07/online-safety-report-discourages-scare-tactics/
Scare tactics do little to encourage students to stay safe while using social networking, text messaging and other technology-based communication methods, according to a report by a federal task force. The report recommended that educators use programs that model safe and appropriate online behavior and use social media as part of classroom instruction. "Unless new media are used in schools and within families, youth are on their own in figuring out the ethics, social norms, and civil behaviors that enable good citizenship in the online part of their media use and lives," the report said.
